What is the difference between Botox and fillers?

Untitled-design-1

Firstly, we need to address what is Botox? People commonly refer to Botox when they talk about botulinum toxin treatments for wrinkles. Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin and was the first to make mass market which is why it is frequently referred to as Botox treatment.

But what we are actually referring to is the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles with the use of a medication called botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin has been used for many years within the field of medicine for treating a whole range of conditions from muscle spasticity, (where the muscles have become very tight or stiff it helps to relax them) to migraines and sweating.

How it works with regards to reducing lines and wrinkles; in simple terms it blocks the receptor between the nerve and muscles. This is needed for the brain to communicate with the muscles to make it move. So therefore, by stopping the nerves communicating with the muscle it reduces or in some cases completely stops the muscle from moving. This is only temporary as your body will build new receptors over time, generally around 8-16 weeks.

This is most often used by aesthetics practitioners  in the upper face for the frown lines, brow lines and crow's feet, however it can also be used for chin dimpling, downturned smiles, smokers lines and even to relax those Deirdre Barlow necks.

How is Botox different from dermal fillers?

Although they are both injectable treatments, dermal fillers are designed to fill hollows, replace lost volume, create plumpness and contour; generally staying in the place you inject.

Dermal fillers are in most cases made up of hyaluronic acid, it is generally a viscous product but varies depending upon the product and area of the face that will be treated. Its most associated with lip fillers and can give definition and plump the lips out. But used in other areas of the face it can improve the signs of aging and really help facial rejuvenation.

As we age, we naturally lose structure to bones and fat pads which sit under the skin. By strategically placing filler it can improve and give a lifting effect as well as being injected into hollows such as tear troughs or lines.

So, which is most suitable for you?

This really depends on the concerns you have and why a consultation with a medical professional is essential as dermal fillers and botulinum have different modes of action.

At a consultation we can discuss your areas of concern, the impact this has on you, medical history to determine suitability of treatment and make a treatment plan.
