As the seasons transition and the air warms, our skin, much like nature itself, undergoes its own changes. Just as we shed our winter coats for lighter attire, our skin too needs a fresh routine. As a registered nurse with a passion for aesthetics, I'm here to guide you through adapting your skincare routine for the hopefully, warmer, sun-kissed days ahead.

For those of us in our 30s to 50s, juggling professional responsibilities and the joys of motherhood, self-care often takes a backseat. But fear not, keeping skincare simple, will only take a few moments each day to get those transformative results, boosting not just your complexion but your confidence too.

With the arrival of spring and summer, our skin's needs evolve. As humidity increases as does the  UV rays, increased sun exposure, and outdoor activities all play a role in how our skin behaves. So, let's dive into some essential tweaks to ensure your skincare regimen is as radiant as you are.

1. Lighten Up: Bid farewell to heavy creams and opt for lightweight, hydrating formulas. Look for water-based moisturisers and serums that offer ample hydration without weighing down your skin. Such as the Epionce Facial renewal cream. Pro tip: consider incorporating a light weight hyaluronic acid serum for a burst of moisture that lasts all day; Alumier Ultimate boost serum is perfect!

2. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen: I cannot stress this enough – sunscreen is your skin's best friend, especially during the sun-drenched months. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're spending time outdoors. Your future self will thank you for the protection against premature aging and skin cancer. My personal favourite is the Synergy 6 by Intradermology; it not only protects against both UVA/B rays but pollution, heat and blue light from your screen!

3. Exfoliate Wisely: As we say goodbye to winter, it's time to slough off those dry, flaky skin cells. But proceed with caution – over-exfoliation can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to irritation and sensitivity. Choose gentle exfoliants containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion without the risk of overdoing it. The daily bright & clear by Alumier with its combination of fruit enzymes, lactic acid and salicylic acid is a perfect addition for bright and clear skin.

4. Antioxidant Power: With increased sun exposure comes a higher risk of free radical damage. Incorporating antioxidants into your skincare routine can help neutralise these harmful molecules, preventing premature aging and maintaining skin health. Look for products containing vitamin C, E, or green tea extract to bolster your skin's defence against environmental aggressors. My personal fave is the Alumier Everactive, it not only contains vitamins C&E but also anti-aging peptides. For a more budget friendly vitamin C serum opt for the inky list Vitamin C serum. While it does only contain Vitamin C it still packs a punch, this one is not suitable for sensitive skins.

5. Hydrate From Within: Don't forget that beautiful skin starts from the inside out. Stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day and indulge in hydrating fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, watermelon, and strawberries. Your skin will thank you for the extra boost of moisture and glow.

Remember, skincare is not one-size-fits-all, so don't be afraid to tailor your routine to suit your unique needs and preferences. And if you're ever unsure about which products or ingredients are right for you, don't hesitate to consult with a skincare professional like myself at Essence Clinic based in Maryport, Cumbria. Online consultations and skincare plans are available and delivered straight to your door.

Let’s embrace the change that spring/summer brings with glowing, radiant skin.
